Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about septic systems, maintenance requirements, and our services.

How often does my aerobic septic system need to be inspected?

+

Texas TCEQ regulations require aerobic treatment systems to be inspected by a licensed maintenance provider every four months (three times per year). The provider must file a report with your county permitting authority within 14 days of each inspection. This is not optional — failing to maintain a current maintenance contract can result in enforcement action.

How often should I pump my conventional septic tank?

+

The general recommendation is every 3 to 5 years, depending on household size, tank capacity, and water usage. During our annual inspection, we measure sludge and scum levels and will advise you when pumping is needed. We coordinate pumping services through our trusted partners.

What is the difference between an aerobic and conventional septic system?

+

Conventional systems use a simple septic tank and drainfield where gravity and natural bacteria break down waste. Aerobic systems use an electrically powered aerator to inject oxygen, creating a more efficient treatment process similar to a municipal wastewater plant. Aerobic systems produce cleaner effluent and can work on smaller lots with difficult soil conditions, but they require more maintenance and have mandatory inspection requirements.

Do I need a permit to repair my septic system?

+

In most cases, yes. Under Texas law (30 TAC Chapter 285), a permit is required to construct, install, alter, extend, or repair an OSSF. Emergency repairs (such as replacing tank lids, inlet/outlet devices, or repairing disinfection devices) can proceed without a permit but must be reported to the permitting authority within 72 hours.

How much does a new septic system cost?

+

Costs vary significantly based on system type, property size, soil conditions, and local requirements. A conventional system typically runs $5,000–$8,000, while aerobic systems range from $8,000–$15,000+. Commercial systems can cost substantially more. Contact us for a site-specific estimate — as a Registered Sanitarian, Mr. Palmer can evaluate your property and recommend the most cost-effective solution.

What is a Registered Sanitarian and why does it matter?

+

A Registered Sanitarian is a professional who has completed formal education in environmental health and earned state certification. This credential authorizes Mr. Palmer to perform site evaluations, soil analyses, and system designs — capabilities that most septic installers and maintenance providers do not have. It means Enviro-Pal can design your system from scratch, not just install or maintain one designed by someone else.

My septic system is backing up — what should I do?

+

Stop using water immediately to prevent further backup. Do not flush toilets or run faucets. Call us for emergency service — we offer after-hours and weekend response for septic emergencies. Common causes include pump failure, clogged filters, flooded drainfields, and full tanks. Do not attempt to open or service the system yourself.

Does Enviro-Pal do septic pumping?

+

We coordinate pumping and cleaning services through our network of trusted, licensed partners. This allows us to focus on what we do best — design, installation, inspection, and maintenance — while ensuring you get reliable pumping service with a single phone call to us.

What areas do you serve?

+

We serve Harris County (including Huffman, Crosby, Humble, Atascocita, Kingwood, Highlands, Spring, and surrounding communities), Montgomery County (New Caney, Porter, Splendora), and Liberty County (Dayton, Liberty, Cleveland). Contact us if you are outside these areas — we may still be able to help.

How do I know if my property needs a septic system?

+

If your property is in an unincorporated area without access to a municipal sewer system, you need an on-site sewage facility (OSSF). Most properties in the Huffman, Crosby, and northeast Harris County areas rely on septic systems. If you are building a new home or purchasing property, contact us for a site evaluation.
